Quick, and Cheap to Run



Over 500 horsepower. Zero to 60mph (96kph) in less than a second. The quickest quarter mile by an electric vehicle of any kind. Capable of 280kph. Apart from chain and tyre noise, it runs silently, and each run down the drag strip costs just 14 cents in energy.

Killacycle, the world’s quickest electric motorcycle, is being paraded around the country, including a performance outing at Mere Mere Dragway (Sunday 31st January) and the NZDRA Series in Nelson 6th February, to promote renewable resource energy, alternative fuels and zero emission technology that exists and is commercially available, now.

Behind the Killacycle NZ Tour is Greenstage, the New Zealand Company that has developed and built the Saker electric sports car.

“The purpose of the tour is to dispense with environmental compromise and to highlight technology with opportunities for cheaper, faster and more efficient solutions,” says Philip Court, Killacycle Tour Director and Greenstage Company Director.

“In summary, green is fast, Technology is awesome.”

Killacycle is one of the star attractions at the renewable resource energy day at Te Manawa on Wellington Anniversary Day, Monday 25 January. As well as being able to get up close to the bike, the international team accompanying the tour will be speaking in an open forum discussion.

Bill Dube is Killacycle’s owner and is passionate about renewable resource energy. He will be speaking on the project and answering questions and technical queries. Also on the guest speaker podium is Eva Hakansson, Killacycle’s Crew Chief, an advisory to the Swedish Department of Energy and a member of the Swedish Green Motorists.

Prius No. 1 in Japan sales as hybrid interest grows


The Toyota Prius is so sought after in Japan it is the first gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle to top annual sales, with buyers willing to wait six months for delivery.

The Prius has caught on in the U.S. and other parts of the world as well, although not with quite the same passionate intensity as it has in Japan, Toyota Motor Corp.'s home market.

Its success underlines the shift among consumers to embrace green auto technology that appears to go beyond a simple moneysaving response to the ups and downs of gasoline prices.

But Toyota can also expect competition to heat up this year, with rivals readying fuel-efficient models, including the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle from Detroit-based General Motors Co.

The Japan Automobile Dealers Association said Friday that Toyota Motor Corp.'s Prius was No. 1 in its ranking of sales by vehicle models — with 208,876 Prius cars sold in 2009, nearly three times the numbers sold the previous year.

Ritsuko Murosaki is one proud owner.

"I was a bit worried about its power but once I got used to it, it is so quiet and it drives great," said the 45-year-old secretary who drives to work in central Tokyo from the suburb of Yokohama. "When you stop at a traffic light, you can experience zero CO2 emissions because there's no idling."

Globally, Prius sales last year rose 41 percent to about 404,000 vehicles from the previous year, according to Toyota.

Prius sales in North America fell 12 percent to 144,300 last year, but that was amid a big overall auto slump, and sales are expected to recover this year.

In Japan, the Prius easily outsold the No. 2 hybrid, the Honda Insight, at 93,283 for the year, and ranking fifth in overall Japan sales.

Coming in second for overall car sales was Honda Motor Co.'s Fit, followed by the Toyota Vitz. Neither are hybrids but both are small and fuel-efficient models.

Green models have gotten a huge lift this year in Japan from a government cash-for-clunkers program and tax breaks, aimed at boosting sales during a slowdown that has seriously hurt Japanese automakers.

The Prius has been the biggest beneficiary of the policy.

Hybrid sales got a perk from the cash-for-clunkers program in the U.S., but that only lasted about a month. The program in Japan is being extended by a half-year through September.

"The Prius is just the talk of the town," said Hiroyuki Naito, a Tokyo Toyota dealer, who could barely control his glee over a fresh flurry of orders after the incentives were extended. "The model appeals to a wide range of people. Some are switching from import models, while others are switching from luxury models."

Hybrid sales already make up about 10 percent of new vehicle sales in Japan. Green Car Congress, which researches and compiles reports on green technology, said hybrids had a 2.8 percent share of new vehicle sales in the U.S. last year.

"The Prius is proving to be the solitary runaway winner," said Mamoru Katou, auto analyst with Tokai Tokyo Research.

A model that sells 20,000 a month in Japan is rare, said Katou, adding that he expects the Prius to sell in even bigger numbers in 2010 in Japan.

Pricing has been a big reason for its success, according to Katou.

That value-for-the money perception is unlikely to be threatened until the arrival of Honda's hybrid Fit in Japan expected later this year, he said.

Honda has not yet disclosed overseas sales plans for the hybrid Fit.

In an effort to ride out the competition of rivals, especially the Insight, Toyota has kept prices down on the Prius — starting at $22,000, unchanged from the base price for the 2009 model, and a more basic U.S. model starting at $21,000.

New Toyota Hybrid is the Scion iQ Hybrid


Edmunds is reporting (in a now removed article) that the hybrid concept being announced on Monday in Detroit will be a Scion iQ Hybrid. According to Edmunds' Inside Line, the iQ Hybrid will be released in a five-door hatchback and sedan body style. The hatchback will go on sale in the US first, sometime in 2011.

Sources close to the project told Edmunds the hybrid iQ uses a front-mounted 1.5-liter gasoline engine in combination with a front-drive electric motor, developing an estimated 100-120 horsepower.

This hybrid system is rumored to return more than 60 mpg. And apparently, it's cheap enough to produce that Toyota will still be able to price the car around $15,000.

Even so, the Scion iQ family will include non-hybrid models as well. The line is expected to include both a 3-door hatchback and a convertible referred to internally as the iQ Sports. The convertible has a retractable top, as on the similarly sized Smart ForTwo. It would be offered with a 93-hp 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine.

A Toyota-badged iQ 3-door hatch is of course already on sale in Japan and Europe. A version of that car was shown as a Scion concept at the 2009 New York Auto Show. Last summer, a 3-door hatch was spotted during hot-weather testing in Death Valley.

Magna International to show electrification competence at Detroit


Magna International announced today it will join the ranks of companies displaying at the 2010 North American International Auto Show, a first for the world's most diverse automotive supplier.

The company's exhibit will be located in Michigan Hall from January 11-15 as part of the EcoXperience ride & drive track and alternative energy showcase. The exhibit, which will highlight green-car technologies from across Magna's operating units, will also introduce E-Car Systems, Magna's newly created global operating unit that serves as an integrator to Magna's broad range of electrification capabilities.

The exhibit coincides with Magna's strategy to strengthen its position as a leader in hybrid and electric vehicle development and products. This is in direct response to consumer interest and demand for vehicles that use renewable energy and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

"The global trends towards CO(2) reduction and improved fuel economy are important drivers of future growth in hybrid and electric vehicles," said Don Walker, co-CEO of Magna International. "We have been enhancing our capability in this area by developing systems such as electric motors and motor control units, chargers, electric pumps, electric drivetrain and lithium ion battery packs. Our complete-vehicle expertise and cell-to-pack battery competence, combined with our capabilities in developing lightweight technologies, adds to our overall hybrid and electric vehicle competence."

In addition to developing products and technologies to meet current market demands, Magna has also embarked on the development of next-generation systems and components. An early success of the company's efforts is a collaborative project with Ford Motor Co. on a fully electric, zero-emission BEV to arrive in the U.S. market in 2011.

Magna is the only supplier with the range of capabilities and expertise to develop electric/hybrid vehicle components, systems and sub-systems, and provide complete vehicle integration and assembly. Additionally, through E-Car Systems, Magna has an even greater advantage of being able to draw on the resources of experts in each of these areas as needed on a customer program.

Geely Rolls Out Nanoq Electric Car


Chinese carmaker Geely presented at the COP15 summit its latest effort in the green car sector, a model developed in collaboration with Danish company Lynx. The car incorporates a lithium-ion battery pack developed by Lynx and codenamed Positive and provides room for five passengers. According to autoarabia.org, the future vehicle will be sold as Geely Panda in Asia and the Middle East while in Europe and the United States it will bear the Nanoq nameplate.

Preliminary figures are pointing to a maximum speed of 130 km/h and a total autonomy of 200 kilometer per charge. It will go on sale in Europe in spring 2010, the aforementioned source noted.

Meanwhile, Geely continues its efforts to secure Volvo after the current owner of the Swedish manufacturer, Ford, confirmed an agreement in late December. The deal between Geely and Ford is expected to be signed in the second quarter of this year.

"Ford Motor confirmed today that all substantive commercial terms relating to the potential sale of Volvo Car Corporation have been settled between Ford and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Company Limited," Ford's official announcement says.

"While some work still remains to be completed before signing – including final documentation, financing and government approvals – Ford and Geely anticipate that a definitive sale agreement will be signed in the first quarter of 2010, with closing of the sale likely to occur in the second quarter 2010, subject to appropriate regulatory approvals."

Geely promised to keep Volvo in the current form but the Chinese owner will most likely expand production and sales in its domestic market and will surely attempt to expand operations across yet-unexplored markets. More details of the deal are expected at a later date.

GM Developing Diesel-Electric Hybrid Drivetrains for Vauxhall / Opel


General Motors today disclosed that it is developing a range of diesel-electric hybrid drivetrains that could appear in production Vauxhalls and Opels within five years.

Engineers at GM Europe's powertrain headquarters in Turin, Italy, are studying the feasibility of integrating the company's existing hybrid components - motor-generators, batteries and control electronics - with diesel engines.

Maurizio Cisternino, chief engineer of GM Europe's advanced-technology department, said everything from mild hybrids to a diesel version of the Voltec powertrain architecture of the Volt/Ampera is being reviewed.

"if you want the best fuel consumption, you have to go with the diesel-electric hybrid," he said. Hybrids are most efficient in the city, while diesels are best for highway, Cisternino said.

Cisternino said he believes that C- and D-segment models such as the Astra and Insignia are the best candidates for "more substantial electrification."

Cisternino said his team is aiming for a $1,500 premium over gas-electric hybrids, similar to the difference between conventional petrol and diesel cars. But he admitted that "this does not work at the moment."

GM's first diesel-electric hybrids are likely to utilize an all-new 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel being developed in Turin - home to GM's global diesel engine development center - as well as a special unit dedicated to diesel hybridization.

The center will begin replacing existing 1.7- to 2.0-liter engines from 2012, and early prototypes are already running in laboratory conditions, he said.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class diesel-hybrid coming next year


It appears that Mercedes-Benz has big plans for 2011 as it will be the first car manufacturer to sell a diesel-electric hybrid, according to chairman Dieter Zetsche. The model which will get this technology will be the E-Class and will be called E300 Hybrid.

According to our sources, the new model will carry a twin-turbocharged 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine found on the E250 CDI but also the brushless electric motor and a lithium ion battery similar the technology found on the S400 Hybrid. Also, the new vehicle will be a mild hybrid, which means that the electric motor will only assist the diesel engine and will not be used to propel the car on its own. The good news is that the new E300 Hybrid will be capable to deliver an impressive fuel consumption of 56mpg on the combined cycle and if the car will be a success, then expect to see this technology also on the M-, GL- and R-Class but also on the smaller GLK.
