Toyota Prius 'C' Hybrid Electric Car Unveiled [video]
Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., will debut the subcompact Prius c next January at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The subcompact member of the Prius Family will join the third-generation Prius Liftback hybrid vehicle, the new Prius v midsize hybrid vehicle and the Prius Plug-in Hybrid model, which will also debut next spring. Positioned as an entry into the Prius Family, the Prius c will offer fuel economy better than 50 mpg US (4.7 L/100km) in the city.
Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, steering-wheel audio controls, and nine airbags will be among the standard features on the 2012 Prius c. The Toyota Entune multimedia system is available as an option. Entune leverages the mobile smartphone to allows users to connect with popular apps and also provides access to real-time information services, such as live weather, traffic, fuel information (location and price), stocks, and sports. The Prius c also offers voice recognition, music streaming, and email/text to speech capabilities.

Tesla Says Model S Sold Out [video]
Tesla Motors has sold out of next year’s production of its new Model S sedan and should earn a profit in 2013, Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said in a Bloomberg Television interview.
The company has orders for “more than 6,500” units of Model S to be built next year, Musk said. The premium electric sedan will retail for as little as about $50,000, half the price of Tesla’s current Roadster sports car, he said.
“They’re mostly new buyers,” Musk, 40, said in an interview on “In The Loop With Betty Liu” today. “Only about 600 people who have ordered Roadsters have also bought the Model S.”
Tesla, which counts Daimler AG (DAI), Toyota Motor Corp. (7203) and Panasonic Corp. (6752) as investors, aims to deliver the electric sedans by mid-2012 as the Palo Alto, California-based company works to be the first profitable maker of battery-powered autos. The company has yet to report an annual profit.
That may happen in 2013, Musk said. The company is scheduled to announce financial results for the quarter that ended on Sept. 30 on Nov. 2.

Nissan Brings LEAF Technology to Electric Trucks [video]
Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. will exhibit five models from its Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) lineup, including trucks equipped with EV-related technologies at the 2011 Tokyo Truck Show, which will be held at Tokyo Big Sight international exhibition center from October 27 to 29.
Nissan is engaged in comprehensive actions towards the achievement of a zero-emission society, and is working on the development and sales of zero-emission vehicles, including the electric vehicle (EV) Nissan LEAF, as well as battery development and production. From July 2011, the company began efforts to widen the EV range into the LCV sector, with the launch of global proving tests for the NV200 based EV.
Extending this initiative further, Nissan is exploring the potential to expand the EV technologies that have been developed to date into the truck sector. Therefore, at the 2011 Tokyo Truck Show Nissan will be exhibiting trucks equipped with Nissan LEAF components and other EV-related technologies. Nissan will exhibit three trucks: the e-NT400 ATLAS Concept, the ATLAS F24 Refrigerator Van by Li-ion Battery, and the ATLAS F24 Power Supply Truck, all based on the ATLAS F24 model. In addition to the above models, Nissan will be showcasing its wide-ranging line-up at the exhibition, including the NV200 Vanette Taxi, the only vehicle in Japan certified as a Universal Design Taxi*, and the Civilian Heart Full Saloon, a version of the Civilian, which is a bus used for multiple purposes including kindergarten transport and customer shuttle services, changed to special specifications for use for welfare purposes.
The NV200 Vanette, which is the base model of the NV200 Vanatte Taxi, was selected as the next-generation taxi for New York City in May of this year. This vehicle is a new generation of LCV that was developed to respond to the needs of customers on a global level and is already being sold in nearly 40 countries. Nissan aims to introduce various new LCVs in the future in order to meet the needs of its customers, and by fiscal 2016 to become the leading LCV manufacturer in the industry.
Nissan Corporate Vice President Hideto Murakami, responsible for the Global LCV Business Unit, says: "In addition to passenger EVs such as the Nissan LEAF, Nissan will focus efforts on developing and disseminating commercial EVs with the aim of becoming a leader in the field of zero-emissions. We are currently making preparations to release a new EV based on the LCV NV200. At this year's Tokyo Truck Show we are exhibiting vehicles that adapt a diverse range of EV technologies, including an e-NT400 ATLAS Concept that incorporates Nissan LEAF components. We intend to communicate to visitors the value that EV trucks can produce. Through these and the other models on exhibit, I hope that visitors will be able to get a feel for the diverse value that Nissan's commercial vehicles provide to businesses."
The main vehicles to be exhibited are as follows:
e-NT400 ATLAS Concept (reference exhibit)
The e-NT400 ATLAS Concept is an EV concept vehicle based on the ATLAS F24 and equipped with Nissan LEAF components. Capitalizing on its special characteristic of being totally CO2 and emission free, this truck can enter into areas where emission restrictions prevent the entry of conventional vehicles. Furthermore, the addition of a high-output, high-capacity lithium ion battery and a high-performance electric motor have allowed for realizing smooth, vibration free acceleration, an experience completely different compared to conventional gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles. Because there is no vibration resulting from mechanisms such as engine combustion, every aspect of driving offers a totally new feel, including when stopped, accelerating, and cruising. The vehicle also boasts a cruising range of 100 km in JC08 mode. Delivering technological innovation in concert with environmental consideration, the e-NT400 ATLAS Concept offers infinite potential for trucks of the future.
ATLAS F24 Refrigerator Van by Li-ion Battery (reference exhibit)
The ATLAS F24 Refrigerator Van by Li-ion Battery is the first of its kind in the world. Its refrigerating compressor operates on a combination of an electric motor with a lithium ion battery power system developed by 4R Energy Corporation*. The vehicle's high-efficiency electric compressor makes it possible to keep the chilled/freezer compartments operating even when the vehicle engine is switched off, while also contributing to cutting CO2 emissions. In addition, getting rid of refrigerant piping in the chassis has allowed for reducing the risk of refrigerant gas leaks and preventing global warming.
Moreover, this vehicle offers two more groundbreaking technologies. The first is the multi view monitor, which is an advanced version of the around view monitor modified especially for trucks. The new monitor provides a bird's eye view of your vehicle on LED screen which is located on rearview mirror area, allowing the driver to check to their rear and passenger side, areas that are difficult to see when backing up. Second, the box easy entry system allows the driver to lock and unlock the trunk door and front doors when their hands are full with the simple press of a button, thus improving work efficiency.

ATLAS F24 Power Supply Truck (reference exhibit)
The ATLAS F24 Power Supply Truck is installed with a 72kWh battery, the same as three Nissan LEAF batteries. This can provide power equivalent to that used at peak day-time periods by a 20-person office space (250m2) over four hours. Recharging can be carried out at night during periods of lower power demand and then used at peak times during the day, thus alleviating pressure on the power grid at peak consumption times. In addition, this system can also be used as an emergency power supply during power shortages or outages.

Arcspeed launch EV roadster with 0-60 time to rival Tesla [video]
Sydney based Start-up Arcspeed have announced Australia's first EV Sports car.
The Arcspeed Roadster is a full-electric sports car, designed and built using a unique all-Australian designed Can-Am styled body & chassis with locally sourced BLDC motor and controller, drive train, lithium batteries, battery & car management systems. The Arcspeed Sports equals Tesla Roadster performance, delivering 0-100 kph in a claimed 3.8 seconds.
The main Li-ion battery array is under the cabin floor and is good for 150 km (90 miles) range with additional storage points designed into the chassis to double the range to 300 km (180 miles) at customer request. Arcspeed claims the car can be fully recharged in just four hours from a standard household socket, thanks to its dual onboard rechargers.
The company founders are; Keith White, tech integration and marketing, Ian Denner, the engineer behind Cobra replica outfit Classic Revival and Jaron Ware, an electrical engineer who is on the national executive of the Australian Electric Vehicle Association.
The guys have decided not to re-invent the wheel and will incorporate the ubiquitous tablet PC into the dash to control and monitor necessary functions. The car, which has been engineered to be easily built in right or left-hand drive, is still some ways off hitting the road - it still has to pass crash tests and the like - but the team have plenty of experience of this with the Cobra replica business and hopes to bring it to market late 2012 for less than $100k.

Azure Dynamics has agreements with over 140 Ford commercial truck dealerships in key markets across North America, 90 of which support sales and service activities for Transit Connect Electric and in six countries throughout Europe representing 13 dealerships with 57 store locations.
The Transit Connect Electric utilizes an advanced lithium-ion battery from Johnson Controls to achieve a range of 50 to 80 miles depending on auxiliary usage and drive cycle and is rechargeable using either a 240-volt or standard 120-volt outlet. Commercial vans generally return to a central location at the end of each driving cycle making for easy overnight recharging. Use of the vehicles will also reduce fuel and maintenance costs, as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The queue starts for 700 BMW Active E leases [video]
BMW is about to launch another electric-vehicle field test, this time a two-year lease on the Active E, an electrified version of the two-door BMW 1 Series coupe. BMW claims the Active E has a 100-mile range and will lease the EV for $499 per month, plus a $2,250 down payment. BMW also requires a home charging station from its partner AeroViroment..
The first such trial was for the electric Mini Cooper, the Mini E, which leased for $850 per month. Those Minis provided key development information and most have since been returned to BMW.
The Active E lease will be available for a limited number of customers in the metropolitan areas surrounding Boston, Hartford, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, San Diego, and Sacramento.
The Active E has a 6.6-kWh onboard charger, which facilitates faster charging than most other EVs. Charge times are said to be four to five hours.
We found the conventional 1 Series a thoroughly fun-to-drive car with terrific handling and body control. The instant torque from the electric drive may add to the fun factor. Unlike the Mini E, the 1 doesn’t sacrifice its rear seat to make room for the drive battery.
For BMW, the Active E field trial will supply valuable customer feedback that should influence BMW’s upcoming dedicated electric line that includes the i3 and i8, both shown around the auto-show circuit in concept-car form. The i3 will use exactly the same hardware as the Active E when it debuts in 2013. Deliveries of the Active E begin in early 2012.

Peugeot 908 HYbrid4 at Estoril [video]
Following its unveiling at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show in March, the Peugeot 908 HYbrid4 underwent its first track test at Estoril on October 11.
One month after its convincing shakedown run at a private PSA Peugeot Citroën venue on September 16, the 908 HYbrid4 underwent its first genuine track test at Estoril, Portugal, in October. The car completed a little more than 300km in the hands of Nicolas Minassian, Stéphane Sarrazin and Alexander Wurz. "Our aim wasn't to put a lot of kilometres on the clock, but to verify that all the chief functions performed," reports Peugeot Sport's Technical Director Bruno Famin. "It was important to analyse the data of each run to be sure we understood the results before moving on to the next step. The system functioned well and responded as predicted, which was very satisfying. At the same time, we started to make a few adjustments to the car's basic set-up. It worked well, so that's very positive."
Nicolas Minassian: "I had the good fortune to drive the original demonstration hybrid car in 2008 and I am proud to have been the first person to drive the 908 HYbrid4. It's extremely interesting to work on a project of this scale which no doubt paves the way for the future of motor racing. As a driver, it's very rewarding to be in a position where you can learn and play a part in the development of new technologies."
Stéphane Sarrazin: "We were able to work through the complete test programme, so that was fantastic. It was interesting to work with the engineers to identify the ideal compromises and, of course, get acquainted with the system, since the project is only in its early days. You can feel the extra power and it will be up to us to harness or adapt it in the most competitive way possible. We will need to strike the right balance. We're looking at a lot of things and exploring several avenues."
It was at Silverstone in 2008 that Peugeot Sport took the wraps off its hybrid demonstration car based on the 908 HDi FAP. The intention of that initial project was to get a grasp of the different challenges associated with this new technology in order to carry it over to the new car which would make its debut in 2011 within the framework of the technical regulations announced at the end of 2009.
"We spent 2010 designing the system ahead an initial bench-test at the beginning of 2011," explains Bruno Famin. "At Peugeot Sport, we have a dyno that allows us to test the complete engine, gearbox and transmission assembly. This is particularly practical since it functions just as it does when fitted to the car. The hybrid system forms an integral part of the powertrain. This test work continued through 2011 up to the car's first shakedown run in September and its first real track test a few days ago."
This track debut was more than encouraging and the 908 HYbrid4's test programme is poised to continue with a second run soon at another circuit, as well as further bench testing.
"It will be interesting to see how the system performs at a different track," notes Bruno Famin. "A new phase will also begin when we start to fine tune not only the system but also the handling of the car. We have no intention of rushing things, however. We are still on a learning curve and the endurance testing will come later."
After the introduction of diesel hybrid power on the 3008 HYbrid4, Peugeot profited from the recent Frankfurt Show to take the wraps off the 508 RXH which combines radical styling and environmental excellence. At the same time, Peugeot Sport has been working closely with engineers from the Group on the design and development of a hybrid system that can be carried over to motorsport.
The 3008 HYbrid4, 508 RXH and 908HYbrid4 are all illustrations of the determined, pioneering approach Peugeot has been taking with regard to diesel/electric hybrids.
In the same way as it collaborated actively with the Group's engineering specialists when choosing and developing the diesel engine for the team's endurance racing programme, Peugeot Sport benefited from the Group's research and development expertise to identify the most effective technologies, the best suppliers and the pitfalls to avoid in the area of hybrids. "We received advice and guidance in a high number of areas. As far as the electric motor is concerned, we have also learned a great deal ourselves, and that has led to a genuine two-way exchange. We are consequently making mutual progress thanks to our respective experience of what is similar technology," concludes Bruno Famin.

The Audi e-tron Spyder in Malibu, California [video]
The Audi e-tron Spyder features what is without a doubt the most advanced and simultaneously the most consistent evolution of the current Audi design language, while also providing initial hints at the design language of future Audi sports cars.
It reinterprets the most important design elements that already characterized the previous e-tron concept vehicles. This also ensures the necessary formal differentiation to the purely electric-powered Audi e-tron shown at the 2010 Detroit Motor Show.
The two-seater is equipped with a 300-hp twin-turbo V6 TDI at the rear axle and two electric motors producing a total of 64 kW at the front axle. The Audi e-tron Spyder's low total weight of 3,196 lbs combined with the high-torque TDI and the two electric motors results in respectable performance. The car accelerates to 60 in less than 4.5 seconds, and top speed is electronically governed at 155 mph.

Hertz Adds Five Transit Connect Electric Vans to Its Fleet [video]
The Hertz Corporation announced the addition of the Ford Transit Connect Electric van into Hertz's fleet. The five Hertz units will be deployed mid-November at multiple locations as part of Hertz Entertainment Services and Hertz on Demand car sharing.
"Hertz Entertainment Services and Hertz on Demand customers have unique vehicle needs and the Transit Connect Electric is a perfect fit for customers looking for the latest in mobility solutions while also achieving best in class sustainability practices," commented Mark P. Frissora, Hertz Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "We expect to deploy the Transit Connect Electric in our B to B programs for customers who need a light duty van with a high degree of cargo capacity as a part of their fleet solutions."
"Since launching last year, a broad cross-section of businesses including utilities, delivery companies and even law firms have used the Transit Connect Electric to green their fleets," said Nancy Gioia, director of global electrification, Ford Motor Company. According to independent data, rental car companies collectively operate approximately 1.63 million vehicles in the United States. As the economy gains traction, it is expected that U.S. rental companies will add vehicles to their fleets including fuel efficient 'green' vehicles.
Hertz Entertainment Services rents vehicles to various studios and entertainment companies that often choose to rent vehicles during periods of increased activity. Hertz On Demand is a pay-on-demand car membership club based on hourly rental services. The Transit Connect Electric program is a chance for both divisions to explore opportunities for the van's inclusion in the fleet.

Catch up after bad luck at start World Solar Challenge [video]
Solar Team Twente has driven 633 kilometres on the first racing day and is now on sixth position in the World Solar Challenge. The great qualification session of yesterday lead to a pole position. Today at the start however, a blown motor controller lead to a delay. The controller could be replaced in 20 minutes. But every minute counts and the unpredictable traffic in Darwin made that the team ended up in a traffic jam. The team is recovering quickly, overtook 18 solar cars and reached a top speed of 105 kilometres an hour. The car functions perfectly and shows great stability.
During the first media stop at 317 kilometres from Darwin the team had already overtaken 15 cars and was in ninth position. Racing driver Barry Vree: “Now I know how a F1 driver feels when his car halts just after the start. Bad luck. But it’s a race and things can change. The car felt good and we had an average speed of 80-85 kilometres an hour. Overtaking so many competitors was great fun. Only in Adelaide, we’ll now the consequences of this mornings casualty.” The goal for today was to drive as far as possible in order to reach the leading cars.
At this moment, the team is in Dunmarra at 633 kilometres from Darwin. Team captain Siebe Brinkhof reflects on the first day of the challenge: “After a fantastic qualification yesterday, we had never expected what happened this morning. It was quickly shown though that excellence comes with practice: the team remained calm and the problem was fixed routinely. Now we’re awaiting the next challenge: surviving the Outback without our truck that carries the tents and our food. The truck is still at about 300 kilometres from Dunmarra due to a punctured tyre. The Electric Car Revolution Documentary [video]
Renault have released an hour long documentary that charts the up and down 110 year history of the electric car. Narrated by Kenneth Cranham, the film features vintage electric car collectors, EV designers and EV evangelists as well as dyed-in-the-wool petrol heads.
The film examines the failings of early EVs, the false dawn resulting from the energy crisis of the 70s and the controversial crushing of the GM EV1. Lastly, as mainstream manufacturers such as Renault invest billions in new EVs and governments invest in charging infrastructure, the film examines why it will be different this time.
